Ken Freedman runs the greatest (and free-est) radio station in America, WFMU. I’ll admit that his occasional extended riffs on German noise rock can get a little—er, extended—but when he’s pissed off he’s at his most brilliant. Cathy worked closely with David Foster Wallace when Ecco Press published Signifying Rappers, and we managed to keep in touch for a while. Along with being a brilliant writer and a hilarious observer, he was a sweet man who wrote postcards to two-year-olds and bought art from stammering nobodies. I’m sorry he couldn’t stay.
His unauthorized Playmobil likeness will continue to consort with princesses and pirates in our daughters’ room, and visit the baby Jesus each Christmas.
